Nobel Prize Winning Journalist Tawakkol Karman Coming to Kalamazoo

Tawakkol Karman, the Nobel Prize-winning journalist working for women's rights is coming to speak in Kalamazoo on Friday, March 20th at Western Michigan University's Schneider Hall as part of the PeaceJam Spring Youth Conference. Having grown up in turbulent times and seeing first hand the unification of North and South Yemen, Karman became a journalist who fought tirelessly for women's rights, even founding the group "Women Journalists Without Chains" in 2005. Her calls to action and weekly protests in Sana'a would earn Karman the nicknames the "Iron Woman" and "Mother of the Revolution." This activism did not go unnoticed by the Nobel committee, and in 2011 she became the first Arab woman and second Muslim woman to receive the prestigious honor. According to an article from MLive, her speech at Western Michigan University will cover the “non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women���s rights." Everyone is welcome to attend this event for a $15 suggested donation, however, $50 tickets are also available to attend a reception prior to the event that includes hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to meet Karman.
