President Trump's national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned Monday after he admitted that he misled Vice President Mike Pence on the contents of a December 29, 2016 phone discussion he had with the Russian ambassador, in which they apparently discussed Russian sanctions.  His phone conversation was while he was the nominee for National Security Adviser, thus he was still technically a private citizen.

Many are pointing to that phone call as a violation of an obscure and likely unenforceable 1799 law, the Logan Act, prohibiting private citizens from engaging in foreign policy.

I believe it had more to do with not informing Vice President Pence about that portion of his phone conversation with the Russian Ambassador.

Would you have asked him to resign?

In his resignation letter released by the White House he wrote:

Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the vice president-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the president and the vice president, and they have accepted my apology
