Oh, This’ll Be Fun: US131 Resurfacing Starts Tuesday

One of the main commuting arteries in the Kalamazoo area undergoes a major resurfacing, with the project set to begin on Tuesday, April 23rd.

The project will continue for the remainder of Spring, scheduled to end on June 21st. There will be single-lane closures and intermittent ramp closures.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will be resurfacing more than 11 miles of US-131 from Milham Road to north of M-43 (West Main Street) in Kalamazoo. M<-DOT says "the $5.8 million investment includes full-depth joint repairs, concrete removal, aggregate shoulders, and pavement markings."

According to wikipedia, "all but 0.64 of (US131's) 269.96 miles) are within the state of Michigan."

Looking at the big picture of US131, the same wikipedia article says,

"Plans to further extend the freeway have either been canceled or placed back under study. Upgrades on the north end through Kalkaska ceased to be considered in 2000. South of Three Rivers, MDOT is studying possible upgrades to US 131. One option for these upgrades is a full freeway, an option that was initially rejected. The preferred alternative in 2008 was a two-lane bypass of Constantine that opened in October 2013." -wikipedia
