Papa Murphy’s Closed in Battle Creek
Papa Murphy’s, the “take and bake” pizza store on West Columbia Avenue in Battle Creek is no more. The store closed at the end of July, and items inside are scheduled to be auctioned off in September.
An employee at another nearby business told WBCK that the restaurant closed two or three weeks ago. He said he came in one day and found employees of Papa Murphy’s taking home their possessions as left at the store for a final time. He said the store seemed busy and observed a lot of traffic there. He said he heard some might have an opportunity to work at another location. That could be difficult, as the company’s website lists Plainwell and Kentwood as the next closest locations. The Kalamazoo location closed earlier this summer.
Signs on the store at 589 W Columbia Avenue in Battle Creek say the store is closed and that an auction will be held. BCLAuction will hold the auction on line through September 24th at 8pm.
The nation’s 5th largest pizza chain, which had more than 1,500 stores in 2017, closed 97 restaurants in 2018 and another 16 in 2017. The cuts are seen by some as the result of consumer’ shift toward convenience. Papa Murphy’s offered a good product, and a fresh alternative, but many consumer’s in today’s market may not want to take the steps to pick up dinner, and then have to cook it. Papa Murphy’s was sold to the owner of Blimpie and Coldstone Creamery for $190 million dollars last April.
