All in a days work as officers from Portage Department of Public Safety rescued "Larry" the kitten from his perch in a tree.

Like anyone who works in emergency services, Portage Public Safety Officer Schuler had no idea what the day might bring when he punched in to work on Tuesday, March 30. At 11:44 a.m., Schuler was dispatched to deal with multiple distress calls from the 2100 block of Jacamar Court.

Robbery? Vandalism? Medical emergency? House fire?

The answer was "E: None of the above."

A kitten had climbed to the terrifying height of 20 feet in a tree and was clinging for dear life. Without hesitation, Officer Schuler ascended from branch to branch and rescued the treed tabby.

He and Officer Doster named the kitten "Larry" and as there was no collar or identification delivered the animal to our friends at the SPCA of Southwest Michigan.

Two footnotes to this feel-good story:

  1. It turns out "Larry" is not a tomcat but a female feline.
  2. Where the heck was the Portage Fire Department?

Great job, Portage Public Safety! For more information on the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, "Larry," and other pets available for adoption, take a look at our Wet Nose Wednesday video series.
