Kalamazoo Weighs Options On Recreational Pot Businesses
The City of Kalamazoo is trying to figure out whether or not they want to allow recreational marijuana businesses to open up within their limits.
WOODTV says a special City Commission meeting was held Monday night, where Commissioners and attendees from the public heard a presentation from City Attorney Clyde Robinson presented a few options for how the city could act; his recommendation was that Kalamazoo opt-out of allowing recreational pot businesses, such as growers, processors, and retailers, at least for now.
Robinson says that as things stand, state law is too ambiguous following the legalization of marijuana in an election last November, and Kalamazoo should wait until the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs develops a more clear set of rules.
At the meeting, several citizens voiced their opinions, some in favor of opting out and others saying the City should allow the businesses. The Commission did not take any action Monday, and Mayor Bobby Hopewell says a decision will be made at a City Commission meeting in the future.
