Multiple media sources including both the Detroit News and Free Press newspapers are reporting Japanese auto supplier Takata has agreed to recall 33.8 potentially defective automotive safety airbags.

The move announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday would be the largest product recall of any kind in U.S. history. The Tylenol recall in 1982 was for 31 million bottles.

Takata supplied airbags to all three main American automakers, German automaker BMW, and most of the Japanese manufacturers.
