A story published on MLive indicates most of the state's wealthiest school districts surround the Detroit area, and the Grand Rapids area.

In Kalamazoo County, these estimated numbers show the Gull Lake School District has the highest median family income (for families with children), at $101,838. But maybe, surprisingly, Schoolcraft is right behind, ranking second, $100,263. Following that is Portage, but another eye-brow raiser is Vicksburg in fourth place. At the bottom end is Kalamazoo Public Schools and Comstock.

In the general Kalamazoo vicinity, Mattawan ranks ahead off all the school districts with an over $110,000 family median income, and is the first district to appear on the list, at #30.

Calhoun County was led by Harper Creek, with $72,882, Pennfield, Lakeview and Marshall, which along with the rest of the county, has been hit with economic setbacks.

The story says the Northville school district near Detroit has the highest median family income in the state. In fact, in these estimates, only East Grand Rapids at No. 4 makes the Top 5. All the rest are in the metro Detroit area. In the Top 10, Forest Hills, from Grand Rapids, is the only exception to list dominated by Southeastern Michigan school districts; and Bridgeman (#21) and Frankenmuth (#24) are the only other school districts outside of Detroit and Grand Rapids on the list.
