The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is, for the first time, assigning a deputy to an area school district.

Deputy Adam Kelm, a 15-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office, will be assigned to Gull Lake High School as the school resource officer.  The assignment will help provide extra security for the High School, and help students with legal issues.

The decision to assign law enforcement to Gull Lake comes after the school has dealt with security incidents, like when a student brought an unloaded handgun on campus last December.

The school district and sheriff’s office say that the position is being added without additional cost to taxpayers.
