Actor Mike McLean is enjoying "the role of a lifetime" as Captain Von Trapp in "The Sound of Music," playing Kalamazoo's Miller Auditorium February 9-11, 2018.

If you're like me, all you remember from "The Sound of Music" is Julie Andrews swinging her arms on a mountaintop, some singing kids and something about a female deer. We watched the beloved music every year on TV and my mother kept singing the songs over and over again for weeks to come.

There's much more to the story than that.

Actor Mike McLean plumbs the depth of Captain Von Trapp's sorrow at the loss of his wife and his despair when he cannot look up on his children without being reminded of his beloved. It is Maria who both cares for the children and redeems the Captain.

Listen as Mike and I talk about his past roles, the meaty story of "The Sound of Music" and the rest of the delightful cast you will see on stage at Miller Auditorium. "The Sound  of Music" had its origins on the stage and Mike and I talk about the magic of live theater.
