A murder case in Kalamazoo has come to a close, a year after the crime occurred.

MLive reports that in Kalamazoo County Court Monday, Theresa Petto was sentenced to life in prison without parole, in the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Rachel Drafta on June 24, 2015 in Portage.

Petto, of Hastings, pleaded guilty in September to the crime, but said that the shooting was the result of mental illness. She says that in the time leading up to the attack, she had been attempting to receive mental health treatment and was denied.

Prosecutors say that Petto shot Drafta, because Drafta had been dating Petto’s ex-boyfriend.
