TreeHouse Foods Closing McCamly St. Plant By End Of 2018
Just two years after a downtown Battle Creek cereal plant was acquired by a new company, the factory will be closing.
TreeHouse Foods says in a release Wednesday that their facility at the corner of Dickman Rd. and McCamly will be closed over the next year, with around 84 employees being cut. TreeHouse bought the former Ralston plant from ConAgra Foods in February 2016, and by November of that year they had cut employees by 100.
The company says that after that downsizing, they determined that continuing to operate “would not be economically viable”; current production at the Battle Creek facility will instead be moved to other factories the Illinois based company owns.
According to the Historical Society of Battle Creek, cereal production at the McCamly Street site began in 1901 with the Battle Creek Cereal Food Company, who sold the plant to Ralston in 1927; the factory was then rebuilt after a fire.
