An overnight fire in the Three Rivers area left a mother and child dead and three children injured.

The fire in the 12000 block of Harder Road was believed to have begun shortly after midnight Tuesday according to fire crews at the scene. First responders said the living-room and garage were fully engulfed by flames upon arrival.

Three children had escaped from the fire using a window to get outside the home before firefighters arrived. Crews were unable to enter the home to search for the mother and fourth child due to the location and intensity of the blaze.

The mother and child were located deceased once the fire was extinguished. The three surviving children were transported to the Three Rivers Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Fabius Township Fire Department was assisted by the Three Rivers Fire Department with officers from Constantine Police and troopers from the Michigan State Police on scene.
