Leaving your home state to move to another can be for a variety of reasons.  Starting a new job, enrolling in a new school, or even just to be closer to your family are just a few possibilities.

One data analyst, Robert Chase, asked the question: "When people move away from home where do they go?"  Using census data from 2015, he created an interactive map of the United States that lists destinations for people leaving their states.

We took Chase's map and determined which states people move to from our great state of Michigan.

These are the top 10 most popular states people move to from Michigan according to 2015 census data:

  1. Florida - Between 21,522 - 30,754 people left Michigan to move to Florida.
  2. Texas - Between 10,215 - 17,623 people left Michigan to move to Texas.
  3. Ohio - Between 11,321 - 16,503 people left Michigan to move to Ohio.
  4. Illinois - Between 9,415 - 14,457 people left Michigan to move to Illinois
  5. Indiana - Between 8,638 - 14,292 people left Michigan to move to Indiana.
  6. Arizona - Between 6,591 - 11,547 people left Michigan to move to Arizona
  7. California - Between 6,702 - 11,002 people left Michigan to move to California
  8. North Carolina - Between 4,430 - 8,746 people left Michigan to move to North Carolina.
  9. Tennessee - Between 4,345 - 8,563 people left Michigan to move to Tennessee.
  10. Georgia - Between 4,140 - 7,348 people left Michigan to move to Georgia.

And the 5 least popular states to move to from Michigan are:

  1. Maine - Between 0 - 393 people left Michigan to move to Maine.
  2. Delaware - Between 0 - 354 people left Michigan to move to Delaware.
  3. Idaho - Between 0 - 233 people left Michigan to move to Idaho.
