Wouldn’t A Michigan Girls Only Camp Be Sexist?
Easy question, if a Michigan college or university were to offer a camp to only boys, would that be considered sexist?
I believe we all know the answer to that question, at least from the perspective of many on the left.
According to Mlive, Mark Perry a professor at the University of Michigan-Flint’s School of Management, has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights against Wayne State University over their computer coding camp hosted at the university last summer. He believes that the girls only camp violated the federal Title IX because it was meant for minority girls only.
Only minority girls, what about the white girls and all boys?
Professor Perry was quoted in the article saying:
I was saying that program should not be hosted at Wayne State…That program is discriminatory based on race and sex…I’m challenging the discriminatory, girls-only summer STEM camps at 35 universities across the country…After spending a quarter of a century in higher education – there’s systematic and open gender discrimination. I’ve just taken this on as a mission to change the gender discrimination that takes place across the country.
Why does it appear that these universities and groups believe it is sexist to have boys only or men only camps and clubs but not girls or women only? Sounds completely hypocritical to me, but when did hypocrisy ever get in these peoples way.
Matt Lockwood, a Wayne State University Spokesman said in a prepared statement:
Black Girls Code is a voluntary youth service organization and a 501(c) tax-exempt organization, and Wayne State hosts co-educational programs in coding and other STEM fields similar to Black Girls Code for both boys and girls…Therefore, the university is not in violation of Title IX or any other statute or law prohibiting discrimination based on sex. In addition, Black Girls Code allows girls from all racial backgrounds to participate in its programs.
Sure sound sexist to me.
My belief is that when warranted it is perfectly fine to have girls and boy’s only camps or classes when people believe it will be better for those involved. In fact I do believe research states that girls do learn more in a “sexist” environment. I do not believe their sexist environments but when it is boys or men’s only, the left certainly does.
