The family of a Polish doctor detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement is denouncing claims that he abused his daughter.

Dr. Lukasz Niec was picked up by ICE at his Kalamazoo area home last week, and has been lodged at the Calhoun County Jail ever since. ICE says that he is eligible for removal from the country because of two misdemeanor charges as a teenager, and also his numerous encounters with law enforcement over the years, mostly for traffic violations. He also had a 2008 operating while impaired conviction which was set aside as part of a plea, and he was charged with domestic violence in 2013, but a jury found him not guilty.

However, WOODTV reported on Wednesday that Niec was arrested because he was under investigation for child abuse; the allegations came after Niec’s ex-wife saw a bruise on their 5-year-old’s arm during a child custody dispute, and the child reportedly said the bruise was a result of her father biting her.

His current wife, Rachelle Burkart-Niec told MLive Wednesday that an investigation showed no criminal charges were filed.

Dr. Niec was brought to the US legally as a child, and currently works at Bronson Healthcare at their Kalamazoo and Battle Creek locations.
