American Legion Honored for 100 Years of Service

Sen. John Bizon, M.D. presented a Senate tribute Thursday to members of the American Legion, Department of Michigan in celebration of the organization’s 100th Anniversary.

“Since 1919, the American Legion has been a staunch advocate for veterans and their families,” said Bizon, R-Battle Creek. “The American Legion, Department of Michigan has fulfilled the Legion’s mission since its founding through programs such as Boys State, Scouting, American Legion Hospital, American Legion Children’s Home, the American Legion Riders, Accredited Veteran Service Officers and many others throughout the decades.

“We honor all 56,567 members who live in the state of Michigan and the 2 million members who live in the United States.”

Bizon, a former U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and American Legion member, welcomed the following American Legion leaders to the Senate for Thursday’s presentation: State Commander Steve Striggow, National Executive Committeeman Ray Moore, National Vice Commander Jim Wallace, Post Commander Brian Mohlman, Public Relations Director Mark Sutton, Legionnaire Marilynn Britten, Legislative Chairman Tim Poxson, Past Department Commander Brett Holt, District Commander Jeff Haeseker and Past Department Commander Dick Chapman.

Bizon noted that the American Legion, Department of Michigan provides opportunities for high school students to apply for scholarships for college, such as the William D. & Jewell Brewer Scholarship, the Guy M. Wilson Scholarship and the Samsung Boys/Girls State Scholarship. Michigan is home to five Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities, several community-based outreach centers, two VA national cemeteries and two state veterans homes.

“The American Legion is celebrating its centennial anniversary tomorrow, March 15, but today we thank the American Legion, Department of Michigan and the veterans it serves for 100 years of dedicated service and commitment to all Michigan Veterans,” Bizon said.
