Charles Pickett Jr. Sentenced in Deadly Kalamazoo Crash
Charles Pickett Jr. was officially sentenced Monday morning in the deadly crash that killed five bicyclists back in 2016.
Pickett was convicted of five counts of second degree murder for the killings of Fred Nelson, Susan Sipple, Deborah Bradley, Lorenz Paulick and Melissa Fevig-Hughes. He'll serve a minimum of 35 to 55 years for each of the five charges. The sentences will be served concurrently and he will receive credit for 734 days of time already served.
Pickett addressed the court Monday morning saying, "I am very sorry. I will give my life for the people I have murdered and killed." Picket struggled to speak as he held back tears.
The judge didn't find Pickett's words to be enough, however, saying, "You selfishly and unnecessarily murdered 5 people and seriously injured 4 others. You could have and should have stopped." He stressed that Pickett willfully ingested mind-altering substances and willfully got behind the wheel of his truck on the evening of June 7, 2016.
