WMU To Host Free MLK Event At Miller Auditorium
Western Michigan University (WMU), much like the rest of the universities around the country and world, have made diversity, equity, and inclusion a main focus on theirs. Institutions around the world have been steadily making changes for all students to feel welcomed and supported. One of the many things that WMU has done is created both the OEI and the DEI which hold events and monitor the campus vibe as far as inclusion is concerned.
Coming up in just a matter of a few days in Martin Luther King Jr (MLK) Day which is celebrated on the third Monday of January. It's meant to celebrate his birthday and commemorate everything he did in the fight for racial justice and civil rights. On years like this one, we are lucky enough to celebrate MLK day on his actual birthday which is January 15th. WMU is hosting a special event this year, looking to spread knowledge and celebrate life.
This year on MLK Day, which is January 15th, the Louis Walker Institue at Western Michigan University is working in conjunction with the athletics department and the OEI to present the annual teach in which has been dubbed Chaos for Community. This will be a public event that will take place in the new student center on WMU's campus. The event takes place from 11-3 and is a FREE event.
They will also be hosting author, community leader, social activist, motivational speaker, and daughter of Malcolm X, Ilyasah Shabazz, to Miller Auditorium. She is set to take the stage at 6pm and it is a FREE ticketed event. Tickets can be found at millerauditorium.com and reminder again, it's free so no need to worry about cost or parking.
Lastly, I couldn't let you go without telling you the new things that are in store. For the first time ever, WMU will have a mobile museum set up. This will be a Black History Museum that will be centered around Malcolm X. This should be outside of the student center most of the day and is also free.
