I get those Buzzfeed-type lists that come across my social media scrolling once in a while, and some of them are kinda funny - "What kind of potato Are You?" "Best Tourist Traps in Each State" - That kind of stuff.

But one struck me the other day, "The Worst Foods from Each State." Curiosity got the best of me, so I looked, and what do I see on Michigan, but Faygo Pop. REALLY!?! That's the WORST Michigan food (or drink I guess) we have to offer? But once you really get to thinking about it... this list might be right.

Faygo is a staple in practically every Michigander's diet. Just like fine wine, there's a flavor for every type of meal. Surely Red Pop pairs well with most red meats (like red wine would), Rock & Rye is a good middle ground for most meals, and of course... Grape goes with hot dogs.

But HOW can a pop with SO much diversity and versatility be considered the WORST food (or drink) Michigan has to offer?

Turns out the bar is pretty high.

Drinks

Of course, if you're talking drinks in Michigan, you have to talk about Vernor's Ginger Ale. If you pit Faygo against Vernor's, Faygo wins in sheer magnitude. It's obviously a favorite of the Juggalos, too.

But Vernor's isn't just Ginger Ale, it's medicine. I'm pretty sure that's what Pfizer put in the COVID Vaccine. It's just a Vernor's capsule. And completely biased opinion here... I'd drink Vernor's over any Faygo flavor every day.

And if we're talking all the different drinks of Michigan, then we have to put it up against Biggby Coffee, Apple Ciders, Wines, and craft breweries.

Dare I say, not even Vernor's can stand up against Michigan's Cider, Wine, and Beer game.

Food

It's tough to compare a drink to a food item - It's like comparing apples to Orange Juice. BUT, is there a food item that Michigan has that could be considered "bad?"

Not really.

This is the state that gave us all Detroit-style Pizza. It's so good, Pizza Hut keeps trying to rip it off, an failing miserably.

The Pasties of the Upper Peninsula are an unmatched marvel in the world of portable foods, and the Olive Burger is something that NO other place can lay claim to and mean it.

And when it comes to dessert, you've got the yearly run at paczkis during Mardi Gras, locally grown blueberries, apples, and cherries. And of course, Mackinac Fudge.

So is Faygo really the WORST food (or drink) Michigan has to offer?

Sadly, I think it is. BUT, that's not to say it isn't great. The bar is just set TOO high in Michigan, FAR above any other state I'm sure.

I mean, Ohio's biggest claim to fame is Skyline Chili. It has cocoa and cinnamon in it, and they put it on spaghetti. Gross.
