Every bartender has to start somewhere. School officials in Livonia are working to do damage control after a kindergartner brought a bottle of pre-mixed margarita to school to share with fellow students at snack time.

What happened?

Parents of kindergarten students at Grand River Academy say one of the kids brought a bottle of pre-mixed, ready-to-drink Jose Cuervo Margarita to school last week in her backpack. The drink contains approximately 9.95% alcohol by volume. The student then poured the tequila drink into Dixie Cups to share with some of the students in the class.

Two of the moms whose daughters consumed the alcoholic beverage talked to Detroit's WJBK-TV in the video below.

Dominique Zanders said her daughter told her she felt a little woozy after snack time. Zanders indicated that the girl knew who was pouring the drinks knew that they contained alcohol.

"The girl poured it in her cup and she drank it and the girl ended up telling her what it is, and she went and told the teacher there is liquor in this cup, and the teacher gave her a funny face," Zanders said.

Alexis Smith also believes the pint-sized bartender knew that she was doing something nefarious.

"I had a small conversation with my daughter - nothing big - and she told me the girl knew it was liquor," Smith tells the TV station.

The parents' anger is directed mainly at the school employees, who they say should be doing a better job observing what kids are bringing to school.

School Reacts

School officials sent a letter home to parents, attempting to explain what happened. They also released a statement, saying:

"While we try to keep an eye on everything our students bring to school, that’s simply not possible. It’s unfortunate that these types of adult beverages can be easily mistaken for child-friendly drinks."

Both moms agree that the parents of the child who brought the drink to school should do a better job of making sure that alcohol is not within reach of children.
