With the rise of Covid-19 cases in Michigan I can't say I'm surprised to see stricter rules being enforced to try to stop the spread. After all, we ALL want to get back to 'normal', right?

Along with the new restrictions, new contact tracing requirements have been issued for local businesses including

  • Cosmetology services and barber shops
  • Places of public amusement
  • Recreational sports and exercise facilities
  • Cinemas
  • Theaters
  • Stadiums
  • All dine-in food service establishments starting on November 2nd

And many more, as reported by MLive.com. Everyone working at these establishments must collect the name, phone number, and date and time of entry of every patron that can then be turned over to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services upon request.

I understand why it needs to be done. I do. But, my sympathies now go to those workers at these establishments who, essentially, have been bestowed this responsibility. I have no idea how each business will handle the collection of this information...but if people react the same way they do to having to wear a mask...it might get ugly. I'm speaking from my own personal experience. When I was bartending back in Florida to pay the bills after I was furloughed it was a daily fight to get people to wear masks inside the establishment. Prior to every shift I braced myself for the push back to rules that I didn't make but had to enforce. One day I had to step in between a screaming man and my very pregnant hostess who informed him a mask was required to enter the building. It was, for lack of a better term, stressful.

So, while these new limitations and requirements are frustrating I'm asking that, even if you don't believe any of it, to proceed with grace and kindness. If you can safely visit your favorite local establishment and support their business, do it. But remember, the server/bartender/minimum wage worker are not the ones in charge and are trying to pay their bills like everyone else. Tip those that live on tips, be kind to those who don't (after all that's free), and let's get through this together.
