The Oldest Bar and Business in the State is in Southwest Michigan
When you think of the oldest settlements in Michigan, Detroit and Sault Ste Marie are usually the first ones that come to mind. But the oldest bar and business in Michigan is actually in the southwest corner of the state, the Old Tavern Inn near Niles.
The Old Tavern Inn is in the small community of Sumnerville between Niles and Dowagiac off on M-51 at the corner of Indian Lake Road and Pokagon Highway. The Old Tavern was on the old trail that once connected Chicago and Detroit.
The Old Tavern Inn's profile on the PureMichigan travel site includes this description,
Old Tavern Inn is a small restaurant that is recognized by the State of Michigan as being the oldest business in Michigan still operating in its original building. It was founded in 1835.
The Old Tavern is best known for their hot ham sandwiches. This drool-worthy photo showcases the house specialty.
