Michigan winters never fail to bring us unusual weather phenomena from ice platters on the Grand River to ice boulders on the Great Lakes. Here's another oddity - a perfectly circular ice disk floating on the Pine River in mid-Michigan.

The ice disk was captured on the Pine River near Vestaburg in Montcalm County and video was shared by MLive, which reported

The phenomenon of spinning ice circles in rivers mystified scientists for years, until a team of researchers replicated the wonder by using magnets and little frozen circles formed in petri dishes. In the March 2016 edition of the journal Physical Review E, the team of scientists determined that the rotation is caused by the fluid flow of melting ice -- not by the current of the river itself.
