The Battle Creek Police Department says that they were called to Columbia Ave. near Helmer Rd. around 6:30pm Tuesday, after a man was seen walking away from his car after it had gone off the road. Witnesses said the man had been walking on Helmer Rd, causing cars to swerve around him; shortly after, the man was found, struck by a semi-truck.

A crash between a motorcycle and a car Sunday afternoon left two people dead in Comstock. The crash took place around 12:30pm at the intersection of Sprinkle Rd. and East H Ave; both people on the motorcycle were killed in the crash, while it’s unknown if the driver of the sedan was hurt.

The 26-year-old had been wanted in Jackson County, and was believed to have been in Kalamazoo County’s Comstock Township Tuesday afternoon. He was first tracked down to the 5000 block of Savannah Ave, but evaded capture and allegedly broke into three homes in that area, stealing various items, before stealing a car and speeding off.

According to his family, 34-year-old Jesse Albrecht died Wednesday; he had been riding an ATV on October 6 in the Houghton Lake Area, when he crashed into a tree head-on. He had been wearing a helmet, but still suffered severe and ultimately fatal injuries.

On Thursday, Senator Margaret O’Brien of Portage introduced the bill, which would name 6 miles of I-94 between Sprinkle Rd. and Galesburg in honor of Switalski. In a release to her website, Sen. O’Brien says that renaming the highway will not only honor Chief Switalski’s contributions to the community, but it will also serve as a reminder to motorists to drive safe.

Vigils were held Saturday and Sunday night, with over 100 people turning out in honor of the teens. They were killed after their car hit a tree Saturday morning.
