Gov. Whitmer Vetoes Bill – Michigan Deer Baiting Ban Continues

It wasn't that long ago that it looked like the ban on baiting deer (and elk) in Michigan would be ending. The bill to end the baiting was introduced, it passed through the proper committee and went on to be passed by both the Michigan House and Senate. And then it was sent to the Governor, where she vetoed it today (December 19th)

According to MLive.com, Gov. Whitmer explained today's decision by saying that signing the bill into law would interfere with the Natural Resource Commission's ability to set rules for hunting. Her statement says:

“I remain fully committed to protecting Michigan’s wildlife, public health, and agriculture jobs. Leaving the ban in place will allow the state to continue working to curb the spread of diseases like Chronic Wasting Disease.”

Next up for consideration is a bill (House Bill 5244) that would lengthen the firearm season by making November 5th the new opening day. We're still waiting on updates about that bill.
