Fox Orders New Show, ‘Pitch,’ All About First Female MLB Pitcher
The idea of a woman playing Major League Baseball may sound like a work of fiction. And it is, thanks to an upcoming drama on Fox. But it sure looks real.
The network has unveiled the trailer for Pitch, a series about the first woman to play Major League Baseball. Because MLB is involved in the show, it has a look of authenticity. The series focuses on Ginny Baker, played by Kylie Bunbury, who gets called up by the San Diego Padres and faces all sorts of adversity while proving she belongs in the show.
Pitch is expected to premiere sometime midseason next year. In addition to Bunbury, the cast boasts Dan Lauria -- the dad from The Wonder Years -- and Saved by the Bell alum Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
While Major League Baseball has given its blessing to Pitch, it's not the first attempt by network TV to dig into baseball as the premise for a series. Back in 2004, CBS aired Clubhouse, a drama starring Dean Cain about the batboy of a major league team called the New York Empires. It lasted one season.
