Portage Public Safety Officers To Test Out Body Cameras
The Portage Department of Public Safety is moving forward on a pilot program to equip officers with body cameras, and is asking for input.
The program is rolling out now, with the department testing the equipment and practices over the new few months. PDPS joins other West Michigan agencies who recently implemented body camera policies, including the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Grand Rapids Police.
The cameras, which record audio and video while clipped to the officer’s uniform, have been a topic of discussion in recent years, related to issues of police accountability.
The PDPS is looking for community comment related to the pilot program.
