Kalamazoo Public Schools Continue Local Food Distribution

Teachers and people that work in schools never cease to amaze me with the lengths they'll go to to make sure that their students and their community are taken care of. It's something I've witnessed time after time in Florida and it's something I'm witnessing in Michigan as well.

Yesterday, Kalamazoo Public Schools' faculty and staff were once again distributing seven day meal packages to local families in need. The packages contained basic needs like milk, fruits and veggies, mac n cheese and other items. I say basic...but honestly, services like this are anything but. Today, I may look at things like milk, fruits and veggies as basic but, I remember a time where it was a struggle to even get that. I know how much of a difference these few basic items can make. Especially, during a year like 2020. And I applaud the ongoing effort by the Kalamazoo Public Schools to take care of their community members.

As reported by WWMT News Channel 3, the distribution of these packages started back in March, when the pandemic was just picking up speed. But, it wasn't just limited to kids of the school and their parents. And it's still not. A school staff member, Kara Young, said that,

Anybody and everybody could drive up and request a meal, no questions asked.

She also went on to say,

It’s just fun to see the parents, the kids, there were kids in the car that we haven’t seen in awhile. It just warms my heart, especially at the Christmas season.

I think, logically, we can all agree that it's not just families with children that are struggling with basic needs this year. It's everyone. Even those who may not voice that they're struggling. If you or someone you know are in need, the distribution from the Kalamazoo Public Schools is just one lifeline. In fact, they have another 7 day meal package handout scheduled for the 28th of December. Below, you'll find the locations and times.

• Hillside, 1941 Alamo Ave., 9-11 a.m.
• Milwood Magnet, 2916 Konkle St., 9-11 a.m.
• Northeastern, 2433 Gertrude St., 9-11 a.m.
• CEC, 1220 W. Dutton St., 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
• Foxridge, 1320 Fox Ridge Dr., 10:15-11 a.m.
• Interfaith, 1037 Interfaith Blvd., 11:15 a.m. – 12 p.m.
