Red Wings HOF’er, MP, Red Kelly Dies At 91; Won 8 Cups

One of the greatest hockey players ever, Leonard "Red" Kelly died today. He was 91. Kelly won eight Stanley Cups as a member of the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also an elected member of Canada's Parliament,TSN reported.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said of Kelly's career: it was "so storied and distinguished that it may never be duplicated."

Kelly spent 13 seasons in Detroit playing defense, then after being traded to Toronto, he was an outstanding center. He won four Stanley Cup rings with Detroit and four more with the Leafs.

In the early sixties, he was asked to by Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson to be a member of Parliament and he won election and stayed for several years.

After he retired, he began coaching, becoming the first coach of the Los Angeles Kings, second coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and finally returned to Toronto to coach the Leafs.

The Red Wings retired Kelly's #4 in 2018.
