They’re Thinking Spring in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as the Soo Locks Target Opening Day
Michigan Winter seems to last forever but Spring is in sight Up North as the Soo Locks will reopen at the end of March.
The Soo Locks welcomes "boat nerds" to opening day as they have set March 25th as the date for opening in 2018. An integral part of Great Lakes shipping, the locks facilitate nautical traffic between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, lowering vessels 21 feet from one lake to the next.
Fun Fact: There are no pumps- the locks are 100% powered by gravity.
The Locks stay open until the middle of January and are then closed for essential maintenance tasks. Here are the details of the opening from The Sault Events Facebook page:
- On March 25th, the Soo Locks open for the season. Join us at the Soo Locks Park to help us celebrate the opening of this historic structure. All Boat Nerds are welcome.
- The Soo Locks open officially at midnight on March 25th.
- The Soo Locks Visitor's Center will be open for a small celebration from 9 AM - 3 PM on the 25th as well.
