The curbside recycling program in Battle Creek is getting a shot in the arm. In April, residents will receive a larger, 96-gallon green cart with a yellow lid which will replace the recycling bins currently being used.

City officials say it's part of a new contract Battle Creek has with its contractor, Waste Management, and means more room for more recyclables.

The new carts will be delivered to residents in exchange for their current bins in April. Officials tell WBCK the new carts help address some of the shortcomings experienced with recycling bins, and they hope it will inspire more residents to participate. In fact, Michigan overall has a low, 20-percent participation rate in recycling.
