Drive Extra Carefully This Weekend. It’s The Start Of Deer Season
It's been a tough week for drivers in Southwest Michigan. We started out with a significant snowfall, and now, it's the start of deer hunting season tomorrow. (Friday, November 15th)
Insurance experts (who else?) say the times you need to be most vigilant as you drive is dawn and dusk. But a deer can dart in front of your vehicle at any time. The Insurance Alliance of Michigan says “in 2018, 1,200 people were injured in car crashes involving deer, making it more important than ever to remain vigilant.”
While Kalamazoo County isn't on this top 10 list, Calhoun, Allegan are and Kent County is number 2, Jackson County number 3:
The counties with the most reported vehicle crashes involving deer in 2018 were:
- Oakland County (1,851)
- Kent County (1,837)
- Jackson County (1,537)
- Lapeer County (1,275)
- Ottawa County (1,267)
- Allegan County (1,160)
- Genesee County (1,136)
- Calhoun County (1,104)
- Clinton County (1,103)
- Isabella County (1,094)
A couple of important things to remember, from Tricia Kinley of the IAM. “Remember, deer travel in groups, so if you see one near the side of the road there’s a good chance others are nearby,” Kinley said. “Deer can be easily startled, making it hard to predict which direction they’ll run and when, so it’s best to be prepared for anything.”
